![]() ![]() ![]() Do Nothing and organize them through Collection Sets, and Collections. Ensure that your Destination folder where your images are stored are backed up AND your catalog is backed up to another drive and not permanently attached to your current computer.Ĥ) Organizing files falls into 2 general camps. Computers are good at doing mundane things, so let them.ģ) Explore the "what if" scenarios. My recommendations are as follows:ġ) Understand the workflows from other persons experiences that are being suggested to you BEFORE you fall into a pattern that eventually becomes your workflow.Ģ) Embrace Automation, its there to save you a ton of time. You will hear of workflows that go from highly manual to mostly automatic. This is why LR needs to keep track of the location that you have your images stored in and Adobe wants you to let LR move those files as it will also keep the Database (lrcat file) updated. ![]() Previews are stored in the database as are the history from the develop module and other things that LR needs to operate. So as a relational database, it only stores pointers and other information it needs to operate. Lightroom uses a SQLite engine to manage the database. My suggestion is to think about how you might want to find photos in the future and try to organize to serve those needs. I do the same with wildlife, landscapes, etc. So I can find all of my daffodil pictures, all of my flower pictures, all of my plant pictures, etc. If I store a photo of a daffodil I will tag it with the state, name of the garden, plus "Plants", "Flowers", "Daffodils". So for example if I want to find all the photos I've ever take of Cousin Bob, I can search for "BobJones" and find them. I spend a lot of time on keyword tagging. So just as important as my folder structure is my keyword tagging. However, the thing about organization is that it's primary purpose is to let you find things. The root directory has a folder for each year, and a subfolder under that for each shoot or group of photos I want to keep separate named "20210912 Walk around the lake" or whatever. Like many people I go with a date-based folder structure. You probably already have a catalog so no worries there. Please direct non-lightroom topics to the most appropriate of the following!
